GERFAM & CPCOP organized the VII Ruminant Production Field Day
On August 24, 2019, GERFAM and CPCOP, with support from Emevep Jr, Megaa and GENAFOP organized the VII Ruminant Production Field Day. The event, which is already part of the calendar of the main extension actions in the region, was held at the Fazenda Escola de Igarapé-Açú and brought together more than 200 participants, including rural producers, students, company representatives and university employees. These participants traveled from the most diverse cities in the region, such as Belém, Castanhal, Capanema, Capitão Poço, Garrafão do Norte, Paragominas and Peixe Boi.
The VII Ruminant Production Field Day began with the opening ceremony, attended by Professors Aníbal Coutinho do Rêgo (event coordinator), Marcel do Nascimento Botelho (Rector of the Federal Rural University of the Amazon), Eduardo do Valle ( Pro-rector of extension), Maria Cristina Manno (Deputy director of the Institute of Animal Health and Production) and Thiago Carvalho da Silva (Representing GERFAM), in addition to the representative of Banco da Amazônia, Gleidson Salles (Representative of Banco da Amazônia) and Mrs Kássia Cristian (FEIGA manager).
At the opening ceremony, emphasis was placed on the importance of holding events like this, so that rural producers and the academic community can come together and produce knowledge that will add to the region's agricultural production. This year, the event featured themes presented in four knowledge stations and four workshops, with diverse themes. In the morning, four stations were presented, namely:
- Use of cassava as fodder,
- Use of corrective in the formation of pastures,
- Pasture management and
- Use of ultrasound in the evaluation of sheep carcasses.
Cassava appeared as one of the main topics covered this year, as it is a crop with high representation in the Pará economy. Many producers cultivate this crop, but many doubts still surround its use in animal feed. At the end of the stations, participants were able to enjoy roast lamb over an open fire with live music.

In the afternoon, four knowledge workshops were held. The participants were divided so that each one could attend two workshops during the afternoon, adding even more knowledge to the participants. The workshops were:
-Silage production for small producers;
Description: The workshop covered the stages of ensiling, addressing the main critical points of each stage, from harvesting the crop to filling the silo, sealing and depletion. The workshop demonstrated how small producers can invest in a practical silo, such as the rapadura type, demonstrating what investments the producer must make to create this type of small-scale silo on his property to feed his herd.
-Calculation of the amount of forage and adjustment of the number of animals in the paddock;
Description: The workshop covered methods for estimating forage mass, forage consumption by sheep, grazing management and calculations of pasture carrying capacity. Participants were able to see how forage mass collection is carried out and evaluate animal grazing, in poorly managed and well managed areas.
- Practice of ultrasound in sheep with a focus on evaluating muscle deposition:
Description: The workshop covered the practice of ultrasound in sheep with a focus on evaluating muscle and fat deposition, demonstrating the procedures performed before, during and after ultrasound and interpretation of the image obtained during the evaluation.
-Tools associated with herd control.
Description: participants verified the best ways to control herds, as well as increase the efficiency of the main zootechnical indexes on their property.
This year the event had the master sponsorship of Banco da Amazônia (BASA), in addition to: KWS, YARA, DSM Tortuga, Sementes Gasparim, Calcário Itaú Voltoratim, Sistema FAEPA-SENAR and Agripeças.
