Implementation of Elephant Grass/Sugar Cane Weeding

 

The II Holiday Course, Implementation of Elephant grass/sugar cane weeding, was held from the 21st to the 25th of July, in the professional animal husbandry building, with practice carried out at the CPCOP (Goat and Sheep Research Center of Pará) , also at UFRA. The subject covered was the implementation of Pennisetum purpureum (elephant grass) and Saccharum officinarum L. (sugar cane) weeds. The intention was to discuss the formation of capineira, its advantages, how to implement it, and how to do this in a practical way, without forgetting the appropriate management of the species.

 

Among the topics covered were the identification and evaluation of Elephant grass and sugar cane cultivars; morphophysiological characteristics of plants and their implications for weed management; fertilization for the establishment and maintenance of Elephant grass and sugar cane; training and use of Elephant grass weeding; use of Elephant grass and sugar cane as preserved forage; animal production using elephant grass and sugar cane weeding; weed sizing.

 

The course was aimed mainly at undergraduate students and professionals in the areas of Agronomy, Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. “The intention is to integrate students and others interested in activities relevant to the professionalization of the courses offered by the university, exclusively those closest to animal production, mainly ruminants, which is our focus'' says Professor Anibal Coutinho, coordinator of GERFAM.
